China completes first domestically designed large LNG carrier
China has completed the construction of the Chang Ping Yuan, its first large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier featuring entirely domestic design and construction. The vessel has a capacity of 88,000 cubic meters and is designed to break the historical monopoly held by other nations in the design and manufacturing of such ships.
The vessel utilizes advanced domestic low-temperature welding technology and is equipped with a dual-fuel main engine capable of operating on liquefied petroleum gas, alongside a shaft generator to optimize energy efficiency. The Chang Ping Yuan is capable of transporting nine types of liquefied gases, including ammonia.
Environmentally, the ship offers significant improvements over similar models, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 20% and sulfur oxides and particulate matter by 90%. Additionally, it is noted as the largest vessel of its class capable of navigating both old and modern locks of the Panama Canal.
