China completes first phase of artificial island at Antelope Reef
China has completed the first phase of construction on a large artificial island at Antelope Reef within the disputed Paracel Islands. Satellite imagery reveals a reclaimed feature approximately six kilometers long, featuring a deep-water harbor, a 680-meter wharf, and the beginnings of building construction, including a helicopter pad.
Regional security analysts suggest the site could serve as a critical military outpost in the northern South China Sea, providing a strategic advantage in potential conflicts involving Taiwan. Ben Lewis, founder of PLATracker, noted that the reef is ideally positioned for such scenarios. While analysts view the development as a potential military air and sea base, Chinese state media maintains the project is for civilian purposes, such as scientific research and weather forecasting.
