China completes first phase of construction at Antelope Reef

Satellite imagery reveals that China has completed the first phase of construction on a man-made island at Antelope Reef in the Paracels archipelago. The reclaimed feature is located in the disputed South China Sea and is being viewed by analysts as a component of what could become China’s largest military base in the region.

Recent images show a large artificial island approximately 6 km long, with some analysts suggesting the coastline could serve as a potential runway. Construction of buildings has begun in the southeast corner of the island, including the installation of a helicopter pad. Additionally, new installations have been observed on the nearby Yagong Island, which security analysts suggest may be an early warning radar facility intended to support future installations at Antelope Reef.

While Chinese state media maintains that the reef will serve civilian purposes such as scientific research, weather forecasting, and fisheries protection, regional security experts view the development as a move to tighten China’s military hold on the waterway. The location is considered strategically significant in the context of potential future conflicts involving Taiwan.
