China completes the world’s largest train station in Chongqing

China has finished building the Chongqing East railway hub, the largest passenger train station on the planet. The complex spans roughly 1.22 million m², dwarfing New York’s Grand Central Station and Europe’s biggest station by several multiples. It sits atop the mountainous terrain of Chongqing and features eight stories, 29 platforms, 15 rail lines and 400‑metre‑long platforms that can handle up to 16,000 passengers per hour.

Construction took 38 months and required about 2 million m³ of concrete, 366 000 t of steel and an estimated 40 000 workers supported by robotic machinery. A massive 16 500‑ton steel tube‑truss roof crowns the structure. The station is designed to serve China’s longest high‑speed trains and is expected to become a key node in the country’s expanding rail network.
