China conducts groundwater feasibility study in Namibia

A Chinese delegation has arrived in Namibia to conduct a two-week feasibility study focused on groundwater development. The assessment aims to evaluate groundwater availability, water quality, and the technical requirements for borehole drilling across all 14 regions of the country.

Teofilus Nghitila, Executive Director in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform, noted that identifying and securing water resources is critical for Namibia, particularly during the current season. The study will involve engagement with regional councils to incorporate local insights into the technical assessment.

The initiative is expected to provide a technical foundation for future water provision projects and may lead to formal Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Namibia and China. Ministry spokesperson Romeo Muyunda indicated that the study aims to secure resources without imposing a financial burden on the Namibian government.
