China confirms third-generation nuclear submarine missile tests

China has announced for the first time that its third-generation Changzheng series nuclear submarines were used to test-fire a submarine-launched strategic intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in the Pacific.

The announcement, released via the state news agency Xinhua, confirms the deployment of these advanced nuclear-powered vessels by the People’s Liberation Army. Unlike conventional submarines, these nuclear-powered models can remain submerged for extended periods without refueling, enhancing their capacity for long-range patrols and strategic nuclear deterrence.

The revelation follows a missile test conducted in July that drew criticism from regional neighbors, including Japan and Australia. While Beijing has not officially identified the specific submarine or missile models used, defense analysts suggest the July launch may have involved a Type 094 submarine. China is reportedly accelerating its submarine construction, with satellite imagery showing new vessel launches at the Jiangnan and Huludao shipyards.
