China considers new safety regulations for vehicle interiors
Chinese authorities are evaluating new safety requirements for modern vehicles, particularly electric models, to limit driver distraction. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is considering a potential general ban on flexible and foldable displays.
Proposed regulations may mandate preventive inspections of large infotainment screens, head-up displays (HUD), and other onboard systems. These checks would assess their impact on driver safety, behavior during accidents, and reliability under extreme conditions. Devices deemed too distracting could be prohibited.
Other interior features under scrutiny include 'zero-gravity' seats, which feature highly reclined positions and leg supports; their use might be restricted while the vehicle is in motion. Additionally, authorities are examining customizable LED daytime running lights and the use of voice commands for essential functions.
