China Consumers Association identifies AI customer service as source of disputes
The China Consumers Association (CCA) reported that AI customer service has emerged as a significant source of consumer disputes during the first half of 2026. The report highlights three primary areas of concern: the difficulty customers face when trying to reach human representatives, AI systems making specific promises regarding discounts or fees that businesses later refuse to honor, and the generation of factually incorrect information by AI that leads to consumer financial loss.
The CCA noted that some businesses appear to use AI primarily as a cost-cutting measure rather than a service improvement tool. In certain instances, companies have reportedly rejected commitments made by AI systems by stating that “AI responses do not represent the company’s position.” One cited example involved a used-car dispute where an AI promised to include registration fees in the price, only for the dealer to demand additional payment after a deposit was made.
