China court protects worker from AI-driven dismissal

A Chinese court has ruled in favor of an employee, Zhou, a quality control specialist, preventing his dismissal after a company attempted to replace his role with a new artificial intelligence model. The company had offered Zhou a different position but with a 40% salary reduction. The court determined this was a deliberate attempt to force his resignation to avoid paying severance, noting that implementing AI is a business decision rather than an ‘objective circumstance’ that justifies termination.

This ruling highlights growing tensions regarding automation in China. While the state possesses significant technological ambitions, regulators and state media have expressed concerns regarding the protection of workers during the AI transition. Analysts suggest that China's limited social safety net and low public social spending—roughly 10% of GDP—may increase social instability as automation threatens both skilled and manual labor sectors.
