China cracks down on illegal python farm powering 436 snakes, spiking electricity use

Police in Taizhou, Zhejiang province investigated an abnormal rise in electricity consumption at a residential address and uncovered a large-scale illegal python breeding operation. Investigators found 436 pitons housed in specially ventilated plastic enclosures, with heating and humidity systems driving the unusually high power usage. The snakes, valued at about 30 million yuan (≈ 4.2 million USD), were seized and transferred to a local zoo. Authorities traced the operation to a resident identified only as Guo, who used social‑media channels to market the reptiles and sourced live rodents for feeding. Two additional suspects were detained, and three individuals were later sentenced to prison for wildlife‑trade violations. The case highlights the link between illicit exotic‑animal trade and unusually high utility consumption, prompting tighter monitoring of electricity data for similar investigations.
