China criticizes Japan’s military expansion and defense spending plans

China has accused Japan of rapidly expanding its military capabilities, warning that Tokyo’s planned increase in defense spending and changes to its security strategy could threaten regional stability. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that Japan is moving beyond its traditional exclusively defensive posture, which Beijing claims challenges the post-war international order.

Japan is reportedly considering raising its defense budget over the next five years to between 70 trillion and 80 trillion yen. This increase is intended to support the development of long-range strike systems and unmanned combat technology. Tokyo is also expected to update three key national security documents in December, including the National Security Strategy, which identifies China as its greatest strategic challenge.

Tensions between the two nations remain high following remarks made by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi one year ago. Takaichi suggested that a Chinese naval blockade of Taiwan could constitute a survival-threatening situation for Japan, potentially warranting the use of collective self-defense. Beijing has characterized these stances as neo-militarism and has responded with political and economic measures, including export restrictions on rare earths.
