China cultural trend ‘Chinamaxxing’ gains popularity among Western Gen Z

A growing cultural trend known as ‘Chinamaxxing’ is reshaping how Western Gen Z perceives China, moving away from traditional ‘China Threat’ narratives toward an interest in Chinese lifestyle and aesthetics. Driven by social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, young people are increasingly engaging with Chinese culture, travel, and digital content.

Data indicates a generational shift in perception. In the United States, 34% of people under 50 hold a positive view of China, compared to 19% of those over 50. In Europe, a survey found that 82% of youth hold positive views. This shift is often attributed to direct digital engagement with Chinese urban landscapes and cultural products, such as short dramas and gaming, rather than traditional media outlets.

Critics and observers offer varying perspectives on this phenomenon. Some analysts suggest the trend reflects domestic dissatisfaction in Western nations, while others view it as a form of escapism. Artists and journalists, such as Badiucao and Melissa Chan, note that for some youth, fantasizing about a different societal model serves as a response to perceived political stagnation or corruption in their own countries.
