China defends interests against US sanctions on Iran

China has vowed to firmly defend its interests following the United States' announcement of new secondary sanctions targeting Iran's economic resources. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent introduced a package aimed at Iran's commercial partners in sectors including gold, technology, digital assets, aviation, and maritime transport. Additionally, Washington sanctioned 60 individuals, companies, and vessels accused of assisting Iran in generating oil revenue, obtaining weapons, and conducting cyber warfare. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that such economic pressure serves only to exacerbate tensions and destabilize the global financial order.

Separately, Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung is traveling to Palau to participate in activities related to the Pacific Islands Forum. During the visit, which lasts until September 3, Lin will meet with leaders from Palau, Tuvalu, and the Marshall Islands to discuss deepening partnerships and regional stability. This diplomatic move occurs amid ongoing competition between Beijing and Washington for influence in the Pacific region. China has urged the Forum to adhere to the ‘One China’ principle and avoid actions that might impact its relations with the organization.
