China delays Chang’e-7 lunar mission to 2027

China has postponed its Chang’e-7 lunar mission, which aims to search for water ice at the Moon’s south pole, until the February-March 2027 window. The China Manned Space Agency cited adverse weather conditions caused by tropical storm Narra and the necessity of specific Earth-Moon alignments and lighting conditions for a safe landing as primary reasons for the delay.

The mission targets the lunar south pole, specifically areas like the Shackleton Crater, which are highly valued for “cold traps” that may contain essential water ice for future lunar bases. This mission is a central component of the ongoing space competition between China and the United States.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman expressed that the delay might have allowed the U.S. to “dodge a bullet,” noting that the mission was targeting the same highly coveted lunar real estate. U.S. officials have raised concerns that China could potentially establish exclusion zones in these resource-rich areas, impacting future international robotic and human missions.
