China Deploys Hundreds of J-20 Fighters, Highlighting India’s Air‑Force Modernisation Gap

China has rapidly increased production of its Chengdu J‑20 fifth‑generation fighter, with estimates that around 500 aircraft are now in service and four to five squadrons are added each year. The expansion underscores a stark capability gap with the Indian Air Force, which continues to face long‑standing delays in acquiring its own fifth‑generation platforms such as the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and in expanding its Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) fleet.

India’s modernization plans remain constrained, with only 36 Rafale jets delivered against a requirement for 126 medium‑combat aircraft, and no indigenous fifth‑generation fighters operational.
