Liaoning aircraft carrier deployed to Western Pacific for military drills

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) announced on Wednesday the deployment of a carrier strike group led by the Liaoning aircraft carrier to the western Pacific for military exercises. The PLAN stated that these drills are part of an annual training plan intended to improve combat readiness under real-world conditions and emphasized that the maneuvers comply with international law and are not directed at any specific country or target.

The deployment follows similar exercises conducted by China in May. While the specific location and duration of the current drills were not disclosed, the movement has drawn attention from regional neighbors. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense reported detecting 13 Chinese military aircraft near its territory on Wednesday morning. Additionally, Taiwan’s defense officials noted that China has been utilizing propaganda surrounding its military activities as a form of cognitive warfare to undermine regional stability.

This deployment occurs amid heightened regional tensions, following previous incidents such as a December radar encounter between a Chinese J-15 fighter and a Japanese Air Self-Defense Force F-15. China currently operates three active aircraft carriers, with a fourth reportedly under construction.
