China deploys naval forces to track US warship and confronts Taiwan vessel

China has deployed naval and air forces to track and monitor the USS Charleston, an Independence-class littoral combat ship, near Sabina Shoal (also referred to as Escoda Shoal or Xianbin Jiao) in the Spratly Islands. The People’s Liberation Army Southern Theater Command accused the vessel of “illegally intruding” into waters adjacent to the shoal without Chinese approval. The United States Navy maintains that the ship was conducting routine operations in international waters in support of freedom of navigation.

In a separate maritime incident near the Pratas Islands, the Taiwan Coast Guard reported a standoff with a Chinese Coast Guard vessel, identified as ‘3102’. The Taiwanese authorities stated that the Chinese ship entered restricted waters with its Automatic Identification System (AIS) deactivated. During the encounter, the Taiwanese vessel ‘Taichung’ engaged in a six-hour standoff, during which the Chinese vessel reportedly broadcasted propaganda messages. This marks the twelfth time Taiwanese coast guards have faced Chinese vessels near Pratas this year.

The Philippines has rejected Beijing’s claims regarding the USS Charleston, stating that no nation has the authority to require permission for lawful transit through international waters.
