China deploys record number of ships around Taiwan

China deployed a record number of government vessels around Taiwan in July, according to data from the Taiwan Coast Guard. A total of 244 Chinese coast guard, scientific research, and other government ships were detected near the main island, averaging nearly eight vessels per day.

This represents a significant increase from previous months, with 55 vessels detected in June and 30 in May. Approximately 60 percent of the detected ships were identified as coast guard vessels. These figures do not include Chinese warships, which are deployed in the area on a near-daily basis.

Analysts suggest the increased presence of research vessels may be intended to map the region for submarine warfare. Taiwan officials have warned that the growing maritime activity is making the security situation increasingly severe. The deployment is viewed by some as ‘grey zone’ tactics used to assert authority over the waters.
