Taiwan's coast guard has reported a record surge in Chinese government maritime activity around the island. In July, 244 Chinese vessels—including coast guard and scientific research ships—were detected near Taiwan's main island, averaging nearly eight ships per day. This represents a significant increase from 55 vessels in June and 30 in May.

If activity near Taiwan's offshore islands, such as Kinmen and Matsu, is included, the total number of detected vessels rises to 425. Approximately 60 percent of these vessels are identified as coast guard ships. These figures do not include Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy warships, which are deployed in the region on a near-daily basis.

Analysts and military experts describe these actions as 'grey zone' tactics intended to assert Chinese jurisdiction and pressure Taipei without triggering open conflict. There are concerns that the increased presence of research vessels is part of an effort to gather hydrographic data to support future submarine warfare and potential maritime blockades.
