China deploys satellites and drones for Tibet earthquake relief

China has deployed satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to support rescue efforts following a magnitude 7 earthquake in the Tibet Autonomous Region. The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) coordinated satellite resources to provide emergency communication support and high-resolution imagery of the affected area.

CASC activated high-throughput satellite internet emergency service lines for the Ministry of Emergency Management, local authorities, and telecommunications operators. The Gaofen-4 satellite and other assets were mobilized to provide pre- and post-disaster imagery to assist in rescue operations and damage assessment.

Additionally, the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) deployed a Wing Loong UAV from Xigaze for surveillance and communication support, with more teams on standby. The People's Liberation Army Air Force also dispatched a UAV to the region. The earthquake, centered in Baqen County of Nagqu, has resulted in dozens of casualties and injuries.
