China deploys solar-powered robots for desert reforestation
China is deploying a fleet of solar-powered autonomous robots to combat desertification in the northern regions of the country. These second-generation machines are currently operating in the Mu Us Desert within the Inner Mongolia region.
Developed by Jintaiing Technology Group, the robots utilize GPS systems, soil analysis sensors, and precision planting mechanisms to navigate difficult terrain without human supervision. The automated process—which includes digging, planting, watering, and tamping the soil—takes only five seconds per seedling. By using renewable solar energy, the robots eliminate the need for external fuel or frequent battery recharging in remote areas.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to plant 100 billion trees to mitigate sandstorms and protect strategic corridors associated with the ‘Great Green Wall’ project. The goal is to stabilize sandy surfaces to protect arable land and surrounding communities from extreme environmental conditions.
