China designates 24 Korean cultural items as national intangible heritage

China has designated 24 items of traditional culture related to the Korean ethnic minority as national-level intangible cultural heritage in its three northeastern provinces, according to a report by the Korea Heritage Service. The designated items include Arirang, Pansori, Chuseok, kimchi-making technology, Ssireum, and various traditional dances and clothing.

Controversy has intensified following the discovery of an information board in Zhongxing Village, Wudanjiangshi, Heilongjiang province. The board claims that Arirang originated from songs sung by people migrating from the Chinese mainland to the Korean Peninsula after the Han Dynasty established the Four Commanderies. Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women's University characterized this as a historical distortion intended to claim Korean culture as Chinese.

Experts warn that China may attempt to register these items as UNESCO World Heritage sites after establishing them as national heritage. Professor Seo has called for an active government response to counter these cultural claims.
