Separately, the United States has overtaken China in the construction of new gas power plants, primarily to meet the massive energy demands of artificial intelligence data centers. According to Global Energy Monitor, the US is building twice as much gas capacity as China. Since January, US gas capacity in various development stages has increased by 50 percent, reaching 378 gigawatts. This surge in fossil fuel use to power AI infrastructure could increase emissions in the US electricity sector by up to 20 percent.
