China develops hypersonic weapons to target U.S. aircraft
China has developed hypersonic glide vehicles (HGV) capable of carrying air-to-air weapons, according to reports citing Bloomberg. This new capability allows for the targeting of high-value United States aircraft from distances of thousands of miles.
These weapons are designed to strike critical airborne assets that support large-scale military operations, including aerial tankers, airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, and flying command centers. Such developments pose a significant challenge to U.S. air operations and survivability in potential conflicts within the Indo-Pacific region.
The advancement is part of a broader expansion of China's missile arsenal, which U.S. estimates place at over 3,150 ballistic missiles. Specific systems mentioned include the DF-17, which has a range of approximately 2,400 kilometers, and the DF-27, which has an estimated range of 8,000 kilometers.
