China develops laser-equipped Type 19 amphibious vehicle

Unverified social media images suggest the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) may be developing a new variant of the Type 19 amphibious 8x8 combat vehicle equipped with a turret-mounted laser weapon. This modification, which includes additional sensors alongside the vehicle’s standard autocannon, appears designed to provide mobile counter-drone protection for frontline mechanized units.

The Type 19 family is utilized by the 73rd Group Army under the PLA’s Eastern Theatre Command, a unit expected to play a central role in potential military operations regarding Taiwan. A laser-equipped vehicle could defend amphibious forces against drone swarms, surveillance, and loitering munitions during landing operations.

While the technical impact of the added equipment on the vehicle’s amphibious performance remains unconfirmed, analysts suggest that operating the laser while afloat may be possible. However, challenges such as increased weight and the necessity of protecting sensitive laser components from saltwater would need to be addressed.
