China advances cislunar technology and satellite maneuvering capabilities

China is advancing its aerospace capabilities through significant technological milestones and strategic maneuvers. Researchers from Northwest Polytechnical University have published a study detailing how potential conflicts could extend into cislunar space—the region between Earth and the Moon. The study outlines six types of cislunar combat, including pursuit, evasion, and strategic blockades.

In a major technical achievement, the Chinese Academy of Sciences successfully established a bidirectional laser communication link over a distance of 400,000 kilometers, comparable to the distance between Earth and the Moon. This technology offers higher bandwidth and greater security than traditional microwave communications, which is critical for future lunar missions.

Simultaneously, reports from LeoLabs indicate that China is testing satellite maneuvering capabilities. In June, a Chinese unmanned spacecraft released a small satellite that performed coordinated maneuvers around another Chinese satellite. While China maintains that its space activities are for peaceful purposes, analysts note that such technology could be used for satellite inspection, refueling, or interference. This development has drawn close scrutiny from the United States, as military experts warn that the disruption of space-based infrastructure could severely impact terrestrial military operations.
