China discovers massive zirconium and hafnium sand deposit in Xinjiang

China has discovered a major zirconium and hafnium sand deposit in Baicheng County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang. Named the “Yuhai Zircon Mine” to honor geologists Peng Yu and Wang Haitao, the deposit is the country’s first of its kind to be identified as an ancient river-lake facies ultra-large scale mine.

The resource scale of the Yuhai mine is estimated to be equivalent to more than 40 large zirconium mines and includes significant co-existing hafnium resources. This discovery addresses a critical gap in China’s domestic mineral security, as the country currently holds less than 1% of global zirconium reserves and relies on imports for over 90% of its needs.

Zirconium and hafnium are strategic minerals essential to high-end manufacturing and defense industries. Zirconium is used in nuclear reactor fuel cladding, aerospace alloys, and marine engineering, while hafnium is a core material for nuclear reactor control rods and rocket engine nozzles.

This find is part of a broader national effort to re-evaluate strategic mineral resources. Recent data from the Ministry of Natural Resources indicates that China has seen significant increases in the reserves of several strategic minerals, including rhenium, gold, and nickel, through comprehensive geological surveys.
