China discovers new germanium-rich mineral ‘wusiheite’

Researchers in China have discovered a new germanium-rich mineral named ‘wusiheite’ (BaGe₄O₉) at the Wusihe lead-zinc deposit. The discovery was officially approved in August 2026 by the International Mineralogical Association’s Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification.

Wusiheite is the first independent germanate mineral discovered in China and is the third germanium-rich mineral identified in the Wusihe mining area. It features an average germanium oxide content of up to 72%, surpassed only by germanium telluride.

Germanium is a critical strategic metal essential for high-tech industries, including modern semiconductors, fiber optic communications, infrared optics, solar cells, and aerospace measurement and control systems. The discovery provides direct mineralogical evidence regarding the evolution of germanium-rich hydrothermal fluids and the mechanisms behind the extraordinary enrichment of this dispersed metal.
