China dismisses Taiwan accusations regarding comedian attack

China has rejected accusations from Taiwan that Beijing was involved in a plot to attack comedian Huang Yi-hao. Taiwanese prosecutors recently indicted five individuals for allegedly planning to stage a car accident to cause Huang physical injury, specifically aiming to break his limbs to prevent him from performing. Huang’s comedy routines have frequently satirized Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Taiwanese officials, including President Lai Ching-te and Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, have characterized such incidents as examples of “transnational repression” intended to undermine democratic resilience and freedom of expression. They argue these actions are part of an effort to interfere with Taiwan's political processes.

In response, Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, dismissed the claims as fabrications by Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Chen stated that the narrative of transnational repression is used to promote Taiwan independence and stir anti-China sentiment, particularly ahead of upcoming local elections on the island.
