China dominates global electric vehicle sales in 2026

Data from the first half of 2026 reveals a significant shift in the global electric vehicle (EV) market, highlighting the decline of European automotive dominance. According to sales rankings, China now dominates the market, with 18 of the top 20 best-selling electric or plug-in hybrid models originating from Chinese manufacturers.

Tesla remains a major player, with the Model Y taking the top spot with 153,813 units and the Model 3 securing third place with 60,542 units. The BYD Seal U holds the second position with 62,413 units. Other prominent Chinese brands appearing in the rankings include Geely, Li Auto, Xiaomi, NIO, MG, and Wuling. This trend suggests a progressive transition away from internal combustion engines where traditional German manufacturers like Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz are losing their historical market leadership.
