China dominates global matcha market with 12,000-ton production

China is rapidly expanding its dominance in the global matcha market, producing over 12,000 tons in 2025, which accounts for nearly 70% of global output. This growth comes as Japan faces a supply shortage relative to rising demand.

Key production hubs include Zhejiang province, which produced 8,851 tons valued at approximately 1.1 billion NDT in 2025, and Guizhou province. In Guizhou, the Tongren region alone produces about 2,500 tons, with 1,300 tons exported to 54 countries and territories. The industry has become a vital livelihood for over 100,000 farmers in Guizhou.

China's competitive advantage is driven by large-scale tea cultivation areas and significant investments in processing technology, such as ultra-fine grinders and low-temperature ball mills, to meet strict quality standards for fineness.
