Zhang Zhanshuo makes Asian Games history with seven swimming golds

The 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya and Tokyo have seen historic individual performances, particularly in swimming and athletics. Chinese swimmer Zhang Zhanshuo made history by becoming the first swimmer to win seven gold medals at a single edition of the Games, securing titles in the 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1,500m freestyle, along with three relay golds.

Japan’s 17-year-old Shin Ohashi also delivered a standout performance, setting a new world record in the men’s 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:04.83. China’s swimming dominance continued with 13-year-old Yu Zidi winning three individual gold medals in record-breaking times.

In track and field, 17-year-old Chen Yujie claimed the women’s 100m gold with a Games record of 11.06 seconds. Meanwhile, Thailand’s Puripol Boonson won the men’s 100m in 9.90 seconds, marking a significant victory for the nation. The Chinese delegation has reached a milestone of 100 gold medals during the competition, bolstered by successes in shooting, diving, and canoeing.
