Cuba faces U.S. sanctions and receives Chinese solar aid
The United States has imposed new sanctions on five Cuban state entities and eight officials, including Minister of the Armed Forces Álvaro López Miera. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the measures target individuals and organizations accused of facilitating military cooperation with adversaries such as Russia and China, and using intelligence apparatus to spy on the U.S.
In response, China has defended its cooperation with Cuba as 'open, transparent, and legitimate,' demanding that Washington lift sanctions and the blockade 'as soon as possible.'
Amidst a severe domestic energy crisis, China has also donated 5,000 photovoltaic systems to Cuba. These solar panels are intended to support rural communities, health centers, and banks across the island's 169 municipalities. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed gratitude for the donation, noting it aids efforts to transform the national energy matrix during the ongoing blockade.
Separately, Havana is hosting the I International Colloquium 'Fidel: Legacy and Future' to commemorate the centenary of Fidel Castro's birth. The event has drawn delegates from dozens of countries to reflect on the former leader's political and social impact.
