China economy slows as GDP growth falls below annual targets
China's economy is experiencing a significant slowdown, with growth figures falling below the government's annual target of 4.5% to 5%. In the second quarter of 2026, GDP grew by 4.3%, down from 5% in the first quarter. Goldman Sachs reports that early third-quarter growth is running at approximately 4%, a deceleration driven by weak demand.
The downturn is characterized by a prolonged slump in the property sector, which has severely impacted household wealth and consumer confidence. Fixed-asset investment fell 5.7% in the first half of 2026, while real estate investment plunged 18%. Retail sales also showed weakness, growing only 0.6% in July.
In response, China's Ministry of Finance has introduced targeted micro-stimulus measures. Vice Finance Minister Liao Min announced plans to encourage consumer spending through interest rate discounts on credit cards for durable goods like automobiles and home renovations. Additionally, the cap on interest subsidies for consumer loans has been raised from 3,000 to 5,000 yuan. Analysts suggest that if growth continues to hover at or below 4% through August and September, more significant stimulus measures may be required in late September or early October.
