India and China report divergent industrial trends in August 2026

India's industrial sector showed strong momentum in August 2026, with the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) growing 8.0% year-on-year. This growth was primarily driven by a 9.0% expansion in the manufacturing sector and a 12.3% increase in electricity and gas supply. Notable contributors within manufacturing included electrical equipment (30.9%), motor vehicles (25.2%), and other transport equipment (25.3%). Capital goods production also rose by 16.9%. However, the mining and quarrying sector experienced a contraction of 5.6%.

In China, the industrial landscape presented a more complex picture. While industrial profits for large firms grew 15.7% during the first eight months of 2026, the growth rate for August alone slowed to 4.2%, marking a deceleration from 11.2% in July. This slowdown was attributed to weak consumer demand and rising energy costs. Despite this, the manufacturing sector saw a return to expansion in September, with the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rising to 50.1%, up from 49.8% in August. This recovery was supported by the global artificial intelligence boom and easing weather disruptions.
