China Ambassador's 'easily win' remark sparks Philippine diplomatic rebuke

Diplomatic tensions between the Philippines and China have escalated following remarks by Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan. During a forum in Quezon City, Jing stated that China could “easily win” a military conflict with the Philippines if it chose to use force, though he added that Beijing prefers peace. He also remarked that the Philippines should “feel fortunate” to have China as a neighbor.

The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) issued a formal rebuke, describing the comments as a “thinly veiled threat of the use of force” that is unhelpful to bilateral relations. Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela further characterized the remarks as a “direct threat.” President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. indicated he would like to discuss the matter with the ambassador in person to clarify his meaning.

The exchange follows previous friction, including Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. labeling China as the region’s “only troublemaker.” The Chinese Embassy responded by calling Teodoro the “real troublemaker” and accusing him of fueling anti-China sentiment. Beijing has also warned that the lack of direct military-to-military communication increases the risk of confrontation.
