China escalates Pacific influence with media campaign and missile test

In the Solomon Islands, two local news sites published identical articles urging Palau to switch diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China. The pieces, attributed to different authors, contained misinformation about Taiwan's aid and omitted Chinese criminal activity in Palau. The duplication highlights a coordinated Chinese propaganda effort, including reported funding of the Solomon Star by the Chinese embassy for equipment.

On July 6, China launched a submarine‑based ballistic missile with a dummy warhead into the South Pacific, the first such test in two years. The launch coincided with the signing of a mutual defence pact between Australia and Fiji, drawing objections from Australia, Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand and the United States, which issued a muted response. The test underscores Beijing’s growing military assertiveness in the region while global attention remains on the Iran conflict.
