China establishes first overseas air force base in Laos
China has established its first overseas air force base at the Joint Flight Training and Support Centre located at the Ban Keun airfield in Laos. While previous Chinese overseas installations have primarily been naval bases, this new facility marks a significant expansion of its military footprint in the Asia-Pacific region.
Both China and Laos stated that the center is intended to train Laotian air force pilots. China’s defense ministry noted that the site will be maintained for normal operations by both nations and does not target any third party. Analysts suggest the move is an exercise in defense diplomacy, noting that training pilots will necessitate a Chinese military presence, including the deployment of transport aircraft or fighter jets.
Experts from the Council on Foreign Relations and other security researchers indicate that this development may signal a broader trend of China establishing similar facilities in other friendly nations as it seeks to increase influence and compete with the United States and its allies over regional shipping routes and resources.
