Sea Legend Shipping launches regular Arctic container service
Sea Legend Shipping has launched the first regular container service through the Arctic’s Northern Sea Route, a project dubbed the ‘Ice Silk Road.’ The service connects Ningbo, China, to Felixstowe, UK, via Russian waters. The route is estimated to take approximately 18 to 22 days, nearly halving the 40-day transit time typically required via the Suez Canal.
The inaugural voyage was completed by the container ship Dubai Tower. The company plans to conduct eight weekly voyages during the 2026 Arctic shipping season, which runs from August through October. The route is particularly suited for high-value, temperature-sensitive goods such as lithium batteries, photovoltaic equipment, and electric vehicle components.
While the route offers a strategic alternative to geopolitical chokepoints like the Suez Canal and the Strait of Malacca, it remains seasonal and subject to Russian oversight. Rosatom, the Russian state nuclear energy corporation, manages the passage and provides icebreaker support. Experts note that while the route provides significant time savings, it is currently a niche service, representing a very small fraction of total Asia-Europe container volumes. Environmental groups have expressed concern that increased maritime traffic in the Arctic could accelerate polar ice melting due to black carbon emissions.
