China Exceeds Renewable Energy Targets While Nuclear Capacity Lags
China’s renewable power build‑out has repeatedly outpaced its official goals. By the end of 2025 the country installed roughly 640 GW of wind and 1,202 GW of solar capacity, giving a combined total of about 1,842 GW—well ahead of the 2020 wind target of 210 GW, the 2020 solar target of 110 GW, and the 2030 combined target of 1,200 GW, which was reached six years early.
In contrast, nuclear operating‑capacity targets have been missed. China’s nuclear capacity stood at about 50 GW in 2020 against a target of 58 GW, and around 62 GW in 2025 versus a target of 70 GW. The current ambition is 110 GW by 2030, but past performance gives no guarantee of meeting it. The divergence reflects the ease of scaling wind and solar through centralized planning and large domestic supply chains, whereas nuclear projects face longer construction timelines and operational hurdles despite strong political support.
The pattern highlights China’s ability to rapidly expand renewable generation while nuclear development remains slower, shaping the country’s overall energy mix and climate‑policy outlook.
