Satellite imagery and expert analysis reveal that China is rapidly expanding its nuclear weapons infrastructure across at least seven secretive sites. The facilities, located in areas including Pingtong, Zitong, Lop Nur, Jiuquan, Mianyang, Jinta, and Guangyuan, are linked to warhead production, testing, research, and nuclear-material processing.

At the Pingtong site in central China, analysts suggest the complex may be used to produce plutonium pits, which are essential components for nuclear warheads. Other sites show significant construction, including tunnels, roads, and support infrastructure. At Lop Nur, the site of China’s first nuclear test, recent activity includes new support facilities and tunnels.

This buildup occurs despite China’s official no-first-use policy and calls for nuclear non-proliferation. While China’s stockpile was estimated at approximately 620 warheads in early 2026, the Pentagon projects the nation could possess more than 1,000 warheads by 2030. Some experts estimate the arsenal could reach 1,500 by 2035.
