China expands Belt and Road Initiative and Arctic shipping routes

Research from Nanjing University indicates that China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) contributes positively to the economic development of participating nations. Analyzing data from 197 countries and regions between 2000 and 2023, researchers found that the initiative can help reduce corruption, strengthen political stability, and improve government functionality. The study, published in the Quarterly Journal of International Politics, also challenges the ‘debt trap’ narrative, stating there is no evidence that BRI participation automatically leads to unsustainable debt; rather, debt issues often stem from internal economic problems within individual countries.

In a separate strategic move, China has launched the ‘Ice Silk Road’ to bypass uncertainties in the Suez Canal and the Strait of Hormuz. The shipping company Sea Legend has introduced a weekly container service via the Russian Northern Sea Route (NSR), connecting Ningbo-Zhoushan in China to Felixstowe in the UK. This Arctic route reduces travel time for high-value goods—such as solar panels and electric vehicles—from approximately 40 days to 18 days. However, the route is currently limited to a seasonal window from July to October and requires assistance from Russian state enterprise Rosatom’s icebreakers.
