China expands digital yuan infrastructure with new payment and smart contract systems
The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has introduced two major components to its digital yuan (e-CNY) infrastructure: the Digital Currency Electronic Payment System (DCEPS) and a new smart contract framework. The DCEPS integrates digital currency issuance, retail and wholesale payment services, blockchain capabilities, and smart contract functionality into a single system designed to reduce liquidity management costs and simplify access for financial institutions.
As of late September 2026, the e-CNY network has processed approximately 4.3 billion transactions totaling roughly $4.6 trillion. The expansion of this infrastructure is increasingly impacting international trade, particularly within Asian and Middle Eastern supply chains. By utilizing smart contracts to automate documentary trade finance, the system aims to reduce settlement latency and eliminate the need for traditional Letters of Credit.
This technological shift, supported by initiatives like Project mBridge, allows for cross-border settlements that bypass the traditional SWIFT network. The integration of the e-CNY across various ASEAN and Middle Eastern nations provides a mechanism for bilateral trade that operates independently of US dollar-denominated clearinghouses and correspondent banking systems.
