China expands drone industry into low-cost interceptors

Chinese manufacturers are increasingly developing low-cost, high-speed drone interceptors designed to track and strike targets directly in the air. At a major drone fair in Shenzhen, producers showcased small-scale interceptors utilizing artificial intelligence and 3D-printed components. These devices, which can exceed speeds of 300 kilometers per hour, are priced significantly lower than traditional anti-aircraft systems, with some models costing between $1,500 and $2,900.

The rapid development of these defensive weapons is supported by China's existing dominance in the commercial drone market. Companies like DJI control a vast majority of the global civilian drone sector, providing an industrial infrastructure that can be pivoted toward military applications.

Simultaneously, the conflict in Ukraine has highlighted a significant reliance on Chinese technology. While Ukrainian drone production has increased substantially since the Russian invasion, the industry remains heavily dependent on essential components sourced from China, a factor underscored by recent procurement derogations from EU norms.
