China expands global surveillance technology exports

China has emerged as a leading exporter of surveillance technology, providing comprehensive digital architectures to various nations. These export packages include artificial intelligence, telecommunications networks, cloud computing, facial recognition, and centralized command systems, granting governments enhanced capabilities to track and identify populations.

Turkey serves as a notable case study for this technological expansion. While its political institutions differ from China's, Chinese firms have established a significant presence in Turkey's digital infrastructure. Huawei, for instance, has marketed AI-powered CCTV and ‘Safe City’ technologies within the Turkish market, utilizing cameras equipped with embedded AI chips and deep learning capabilities.

Global leaders in video-surveillance equipment, such as Hikvision and Dahua, alongside Huawei, provide technologies ranging from hardware to advanced AI analytics. This trend raises questions regarding whether the widespread adoption of ‘Smart City’ technology may lead to increased technological dependency on China and the potential for other nations to adopt Chinese-style surveillance models.
