China expands global water technology exports amid domestic shortages

China is becoming a major international supplier of water technology, including desalination membranes, filtration equipment, and engineering services. This expansion targets parched regions across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, often facilitated through the Belt and Road Initiative. Key markets include Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Tanzania.

According to UN Comtrade, China exported over $2 billion of water filtering and purifying machinery in 2025, a 25 percent increase from $1.6 billion in 2020. Companies such as Vontron Technology and PowerChina are actively participating in large-scale projects, including a water supply initiative in Tanzania designed to serve 450,000 people.

This global push is driven by domestic water security concerns. Beijing has prioritized water conservancy, with annual spending exceeding 1.2 trillion yuan ($170 billion), a figure that rivals the nation's central military budget. Experts note that climate change and glacier erosion in Tibet, alongside groundwater depletion in northern China, pose significant risks to the country's natural water supplies.
