China expands hydrogen energy use through regional pilot programs

China is accelerating its development of hydrogen energy through comprehensive pilot programs launched in August 2026 across five major urban agglomerations, including the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The initiative focuses on diversifying energy supplies and transitioning toward non-fossil fuel sources, a move formally integrated into the country’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030).

With an annual production exceeding 39 million tons, China currently holds more than half of the world's hydrogen production capacity. The technology is being applied to various sectors, most notably transportation. In Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province, heavy-duty hydrogen fuel cell trucks have demonstrated the ability to travel over 500 kilometers on a single 37-kilogram charge. Additionally, hydrogen is being utilized in daily life, such as in Weifang, Shandong province, where it is mixed with conventional gas for cleaner cooking.

To support infrastructure, China is constructing its first interprovincial hydrogen pipeline to connect Inner Mongolia with Beijing. The total length of constructed and projected pipelines is expected to exceed 13,000 kilometers. In western regions, authorities are leveraging solar and wind energy to produce green hydrogen through water electrolysis. The comprehensive development of this sector is estimated to create a market valued at approximately 1 trillion yuan.
