China expands influence in Latin America to manage domestic economic pressures

China is expanding its economic and geopolitical influence in Latin America as a strategic response to domestic challenges, including slowing economic growth, a real estate crisis, and high youth unemployment. According to Ning Leng of Georgetown University, Beijing is using infrastructure financing to export its industrial overcapacity in sectors like steel, cement, and solar panels. This model often involves loans tied to contracts that utilize Chinese companies, engineers, and equipment, effectively externalizing domestic unemployment.

Data from the China Index by Doublethink Lab reveals a methodical progression of influence across the region. Economic and technological ties are particularly strong in sectors involving critical minerals. Brazil shows high technological penetration at 79.5%, while Peru, Chile, and Argentina maintain deep economic links through the mining of copper and lithium. This structural foundation of trade and infrastructure investment serves as a platform for broader influence extending into academia and other social dimensions.
