China expands influence through media and global governance reforms

China is pursuing strategic influence through both media outreach in Latin America and proposals for international governance reform. In Guatemala, the China Global Television Network (CGTN) has increased its presence by incorporating local voices to highlight Chinese technology, products, and economic cooperation. This media offensive coincides with significant trade disparities; between January and May 2026, Guatemala imported USD 2,486 million from mainland China, compared to USD 78.9 million from Taiwan. This economic shift occurs as Guatemala maintains official diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

On the global stage, President Xi Jinping has called for the construction of a more equitable global governance system to address deficits in peace, development, and security. Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced eight concrete measures to advance this agenda, including active participation in United Nations reforms and promoting greater representation for developing nations. Proposed actions include the creation of a global governance research center and the development of proposals regarding outer space governance.
