China expands maritime pressure near Taiwan's eastern coast

Increased Chinese maritime activity near Taiwan’s eastern coast suggests an expansion of geopolitical pressure through grey-zone tactics. In August 2026, a Chinese fishing vessel suspected of being part of a maritime militia, the Minfudingyu 07902, was spotted approximately 50 kilometers off the coast of Hualien. This marks the first recorded instance of such a militia vessel operating in these Pacific waters, which were previously outside the typical range of these paramilitary units.

The vessel was observed operating alongside a Chinese coast guard ship and a research vessel. Analysts and Taiwan’s military suggest these maneuvers aim to normalize Chinese presence and assert jurisdiction over strategic maritime routes without triggering a full-scale military conflict. By using coast guard and militia vessels to perform law enforcement-style actions, Beijing can create ambiguity, potentially complicating responses from Taiwan and the United States while monitoring or isolating the island.
