China expands nuclear arsenal with hundreds of missile silos

China is significantly expanding its nuclear arsenal through the large-scale accumulation of strategic forces based in silos. This expansion represents a major advancement in the country's military capabilities.

Reports indicate that China has constructed approximately 320 suspected intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) silos across three primary sites near Yumen, Hami, and Yulin. These sites contain roughly 120, 110, and 90 silos, respectively. The silos are spread across vast areas totaling several thousand square kilometers, with significant distances between them to complicate neutralization efforts.

This development poses a challenge to United States military strategy, specifically the B-21 strategic bomber program, which is designed to penetrate heavily defended airspace to neutralize land-based nuclear forces. The rapid growth of China's nuclear deterrence, combined with strengthened air defenses and improvements to its naval and aerial nuclear triad, is making the destruction of its nuclear forces increasingly difficult.
